Halloween in San Francisco 2026: A Downtown Guide

Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, which has not happened since 2020 and will not happen again until 2037. It also means the celebration spreads across two nights rather than one, and downtown gets the better half of the deal.
Here is how the weekend actually lays out, and where to be for each part of it.
Friday, October 30: Nightmare on Front Street
The big one, and it is free.
Nightmare on Front Street takes over the Front Street Entertainment Zone between California and Sacramento from 4pm to 10pm on Friday, October 30. The street closes to traffic, three bars anchor the block, and because this is California's first Entertainment Zone you can carry your drink out of the bar and into the street.
Live DJs, themed cocktails, food, and the best costume-watching in the city. All ages, 21+ to drink with ID.
It is a four-minute walk from Embarcadero BART, which is the only sensible way to arrive.

Saturday, October 31: Halloween night
With Halloween proper landing on a Saturday, the city splits in two.
The Castro and the Mission get the costume parades and the house parties. North Beach does what North Beach does. SoMa runs the club nights, which sell out in advance and cost real money.
Downtown is the quieter, better option if you are over about twenty-five. The Financial District empties of office workers and fills with people who want a drink and a table and a conversation they can hear. The bars that are open are properly open, and you are never more than a few blocks from a train home.
The Financial District case
We are biased, but the argument holds up.
Harrington's has been at 245 Front Street since 1935. Ninety-one Halloweens. Three connected rooms, a long bar, a patio on the street, and a kitchen that does not stop serving at nine.
- The Dark Side, the original bar: low light, dark wood, the right room for a Halloween drink
- The Light Side: bright, open, and able to take a crowd without anyone being stuck in a corridor
- The Patio: Front Street itself, which is the best seat in the house on the thirtieth
Food runs all evening. The wings, the pub burger, the big pretzel with Guinness beer cheese. The bar does a proper Irish coffee, which on a cold San Francisco night in late October is not a gimmick.
Practical notes
Transport. Embarcadero and Montgomery stations are three and four blocks away. On Halloween weekend that matters more than parking does, because parking will not exist.
Timing. Friday's block party starts at 4pm, and the first couple of hours are the civilised ones. Saturday night downtown fills up later, from about eight.
Groups. If there are more than ten of you, book something. Both Friday and Saturday will be busy, and standing in a doorway with fourteen friends is nobody's night out.
Bringing a group, or a whole company
We hold rooms for groups, and we are flexible about how it works. Most venues in this city hand you three packages and a list of what you are not allowed to do. We would rather hear what you actually want the night to be and build it from there.
Up to 200 guests for a full buyout across the three rooms. Smaller groups take one room.
And then it is December
Halloween weekend is the unofficial starting gun for holiday party season, and downtown books up faster than people expect. Prime December dates are largely claimed by early October, so if your company party is still an idea rather than a booking, now is the moment.
We are closed to the public at weekends, which makes a Saturday buyout unusually good value: the whole building, nobody else in it.
