New Year's Eve in San Francisco

New Year's Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, which in San Francisco means the city gets a proper midweek night out rather than a long weekend that empties the Financial District.

Here is what is actually confirmed so far, what is not, and where to position yourself if you want to see the waterfront at midnight without spending the night in a queue.

What is confirmed, and what is not

Being straight about this: as of early November, the city has a fireworks show planned for 31 December 2026, but the time and location have not been published. Anyone telling you the exact launch point today is guessing.

What we can tell you is how it has run before, because the footprint has been consistent.

How it worked last year

The 2025 show was centred on the Ferry Building, along the Embarcadero between Mission and Folsom, starting at midnight and running about fifteen minutes. The advice that year was to arrive by 11:30pm and head south of the Ferry Building for the clearest view, with the stretch between the Ferry Building and the Bay Bridge named as the prime viewing area.

It is free, it is outdoors, and roughly 200,000 people turn up. Dress for it. The waterfront in late December is colder than the forecast suggests once you have been standing still for an hour.

Getting there and getting home

Embarcadero BART and Muni is the obvious way in, and it is about a four minute walk from Front Street. From the station the waterfront is a further three or four minutes.

One caution: late-night BART and Muni arrangements for this New Year's Eve have not been published yet. Previous years have run extended service, but do not assume it. Check the week before, and have a backup plan that is not a rideshare surge at 12:20am three blocks from a closed street.

Why downtown is the sensible side of the city

Most of the New Year's Eve noise in San Francisco happens in the Mission, SoMa and North Beach, where the club nights sell out in advance and cost real money.

The Financial District is the opposite trade. It is quiet until about nine, it is the closest neighbourhood to the fireworks, and it is full of bars that are genuinely open rather than running a ticketed event. You can have dinner, have a drink, walk four minutes, watch the show, and be on a train home before the Mission has finished queueing.

Where Harrington's fits

We have been on this corner since 1935, which is ninety-one New Year's Eves. Three connected rooms, a long bar, and a patio on Front Street, five minutes from where the fireworks go up.

Our regular hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to midnight. New Year's Eve hours can differ from a normal Thursday, so call us on (415) 236-0095 to check before you plan your night around us. Same for a table: on a night like this one it is worth ten seconds on the phone.

If you are bringing a group

Turning up with twenty people at nine o'clock on New Year's Eve and hoping for the best is a plan, but not a good one. The Dark Side or the Light Side can be held for a group, and the whole building is available for a buyout.
